Africa Jacana is the only bird in the world to carry a baby on its stomach
The African jacana (Actophilornis africanus) belongs to the Jacanidae family and can be identified by their long toes and long claws that allow them to walk on floating vegetation in shallow lakes, their favorite habitat. Jacanas are found throughout the world in the tropics, and this species is found in sub-Saharan Africa. For the origin and pronunciation of the name, see Jacanidae.
The African Jakana is an outstanding and infallible bird. They can measure 23 to 31 centimeters in length (9.1 to 12.2 inches). As in other jacanahs, females are generally larger than males. Males weigh 115 to 224 grams (4.1 to 7.9 ounces), 137 grams (4.8 ounces) on average, and females 167 to 290 grams (5.9 to 10.2 ounces) on average, 261 grams (9.2 ounces). With a similarly sized Madagascar jacana, this appears to be the heaviest jacana species. They have a chestnut upper body with black wings, back neck and eye stripes.
